Protocol Description

GPS (Global Positioning System) is a satellite-based navigation platform operated by the United States government. It provides location, velocity and time synchronization data for air, sea and land travel. GPS does not require the user to transmit any data and operates independently of any cell or network coverage. GPS is free-to-use and has become the de-facto tracking/positioning service. It is used by over 1 billion devices worldwide.

Edge IoT use cases for GPS include asset monitoring, transportation, fleet management and healthcare. Information provided usually includes time, date, track, climb, altitude, speed, latitude and longitude.

A device with a GPS receiver runs a local GPS module that accesses the satellite-based information. Edge Gateways and Servers usually operate a GPS daemon to manage the GPS module. Most GPS modules utilize the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) specification that defines a standard format for GPS data

GPS Connector Specification

IOTech’s GPS device connector supports the collection of key positional information provided by GPS devices

The GPS device connector requires connection to a GPS daemon and implements the following key features:

  • Connection to either a local or remote GPS daemon (gpsd)

  • Support for connecting to the GPS daemon in both polling and non-polling modes

  • Pre-configured support for reading the following data from the GPS daemon : time, date, degrees from true north, speed of climb, vertical positioning, speed of travel, latitude and longitude

  • Support for String and Float64 data relating to the above data

How to Buy

GPS Device Connector is available to buy from our store. To connect your IoT endpoint (device/sensor/thing) to a GPS enabled device, follow the steps below; 

  1. Go to our marketplace or click the "Buy Now" button below.  
  2. Choose the edge software platform you would like to run this on (Edge Xpert, Edge XRT, EdgeX) and start building the specifications based on your requirements.

  3. Once your cart is complete, submit the order and proceed to checkout. You will be required to register or log in to your existing account.

  4. Once you have filled in your Company Information, select your preferred payment method. You can pay via Credit Card or a Purchase Order. You will need to request a quote for Purchase Orders.

    • For Credit Card payments,

      1. Submit billing information and proceed to payment.

    • For Purchase Orders,

      1. Submit a request for a quote by clicking the "Request a Quote" button and wait for IOTech to approve. Once it's approved, you will receive an email with the approved quote attached.

      2. Sign the approved quote and log back in to your account. On your "Quotes" tab, select the approved quote and click "Order Now". 

      3. Go to your cart. Any item on your cart will be cleared and replaced with the items on your approved quote. Click "Proceed to Checkout"

      4. Supply your company information and select payment method. You can either pay via Credit Card or Submit a P.O.
      5. If you choose to pay via Credit Card, fill the billing information and proceed to payment.
      6. If you choose to pay by PO, enter the PO number (optional), attach the signed quotation and the Purchase Order (optional).
      7. Review the order and Submit.
