What is WebSocket?
- WebSocket is a standards-based communication protocol that provides bi-directional communication over a single TCP connection
- WebSocket-based communication is utilized for services that require continuous data exchanges, e.g., online gaming and other real-time systems. Web browsers usually support WebSocket communication as standard
- The WebSocket protocol is described in the RFC 6455 specification which describes both the ws:// and the wss:// (Web Socket Secure) protocols as two URI schemas
- Web Socket Secure adds encryption and operates over TLS
IOTech's WebSocket device connector provides an easy way for third-party applications to push data into Edge Xpert via the WebSocket protocol. The current implementation is intended for one-way communication into Edge Xpert via asynchronous readings
The WebSocket device connector implements the following key features:
- Support for both ws and wss schemes
- Connection to multiple WebSocket endpoints
- Retries after lost connection
- Data parsing from incoming payloads
- One-way communication, pushing data to Edge Xpert
- Asynchronous readings
- Support for Boolean, Int8, Uint8, Int16, Uint16, Int32, Uint32, Int64, Uint64, Float32, Float64 and String data types
