IOTech announces latest release of Edge XRT, its open edge software platform for time-critical IoT systems

Edge XRT v1.1 adds configurable OT and cloud connectivity options, improved tooling and comprehensive support for Microsoft's new generation of Azure Sphere embedded MCUs. Edge XRT greatly simplifies the development of time-critical IoT systems at the edge and enables application portability, improved supportability and faster time-to-market for new IoT edge applications. Edge XRT runs on commodity hardware, independent of the silicon provider and operating system, and has complete deployment flexibility. It can be deployed as a native application, containerized and/or into a virtualized environment. With its small memory footprint and efficient use of computing resources, Edge XRT is suitable for microcontroller-based IoT applications, including instrumentation and equipment monitoring, automobile engine management systems, medical devices, home automation and consumer electronics.

Hitting Performance Targets at the IoT Edge

Edge computing is all about the premise of an organization processing its operational data at the edge of the network. That means performing data collection functions and running decision making and control algorithms as close to the edge sensors and OT devices as possible. The EdgeX Foundry framework helps makes that premise a reality and provides an open, vendor-neutral approach for doing so. However, we must never lose sight of the fact that businesses will want to understand the full implications, including the fully loaded cost, of rolling out an edge system. EdgeX is a fantastic project for helping to simplify the challenges of edge computing. The open-source and collaborative nature of the project brings together ideas from edge experts around the world. However, to pick up the point about businesses needing to understand the full implications of selecting an edge solution, companies are usually reluctant to deploy open-source code without having guaranteed help at hand and support contracts in place.
