IOTech New Online Store is Now Open

Utilize IOTech's edge software platforms and commercial-grade connectors by purchasing exactly the product features you need using our new online store. Recognizing that our products offer a wide range of edge computing features and that not all customers will use every capability or need to use every type of device connector, we have simplified the commercial model and the way in which our products can be selected and deployed. So, in response to customer demand, our marketing team has been working on making our products available to purchase online. This is now live and coincides with the Edge Xpert 1.8 release we have just made. Our new online store makes it easy and convenient to buy exactly the product set you need for your edge solution deployments. You can buy the exact number of units of Edge Xpert or Edge XRT that you need, the specific device connectors for your use case, the optional SDKs when you need them, and any other add-on you require. You can also choose the support and training options you need. All of this keeps the pricing competitive and provides great value to the customer. We support credit card payments or you can request a quotation which will allow you to raise a purchase order in your organization before returning to your account to complete the order.

Industrial Device Connectivity for EdgeX Foundry

IOTech's commercial-grade device connectors enable EdgeX users to simplify the work required to connect and communicate with different devices at sensors at the IoT edge using Modbus, OPC UA, BACnet, REST and more. EdgeX users can now utilize IOTech's commercial-grade connectors and all customers can purchase exactly the products they need using our new online store. IOTech's new device connectivity tooling makes it easy to create the configurations that describe your edge IoT devices. It's then really simple to get those devices quickly onboarded to either one of IOTech's commercial edge platforms or the open-source EdgeX Foundry platform. We are really pleased to have made that tool available as a free online service to the EdgeX community. Expertise in Industrial Connectivity we have built up a large set of device connectors for our Edge Xpert and Edge XRT platforms and support a long list of protocols including Modbus, BACnet, OPC UA, BLE, Zigbee, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP and many others. Whether your industry vertical is manufacturing, process control, telemetry, building automation or retail, you need will device connectivity. Read about the full list we provide here.

IOTech Announce Support for Computer Vision and AI at the IoT Edge

In conjunction with existing support for IP camera and video device connectivity, Edge Xpert users can now easily control camera devices, collect video streams and automatically apply AI and vision inference right at the edge. The service supports deploying models that can include object detection, classification and recognition, and passes that inferred intelligence to other services for decision making and control. Edge Xpert already supports ingestion of data from many industrial protocols and devices so users can fuse together and aggregate sensor data with vision inference results to give a complete and accurate picture of the edge environment.

Device Connectivity Tooling at the Edge

IOTech's new device connectivity tooling made available to the EdgeX community to save developer time and foster collaboration. IOTech's edge computing software platforms are designed to support cases exactly like this. Based on the Linux Foundation's open source EdgeX Foundry project, Edge Xpert and its time-critical sister product Edge XRT are modern microservice architectures with dedicated Device Service connectors that are designed to easily interface with the devices found at the IoT edge. The EdgeX Device Services provide a decoupling where devices and sensors speaking different protocols are easily connected to the platform via a standard code-free mechanism. To connect a device to EdgeX, the user just needs to configure the mapping between the device's attributes and EdgeX.

Hitting Performance Targets at the IoT Edge

Edge computing is all about the premise of an organization processing its operational data at the edge of the network. That means performing data collection functions and running decision making and control algorithms as close to the edge sensors and OT devices as possible. The EdgeX Foundry framework helps makes that premise a reality and provides an open, vendor-neutral approach for doing so. However, we must never lose sight of the fact that businesses will want to understand the full implications, including the fully loaded cost, of rolling out an edge system. EdgeX is a fantastic project for helping to simplify the challenges of edge computing. The open-source and collaborative nature of the project brings together ideas from edge experts around the world. However, to pick up the point about businesses needing to understand the full implications of selecting an edge solution, companies are usually reluctant to deploy open-source code without having guaranteed help at hand and support contracts in place.

Building Automation: A Sweet Spot for EdgeX

The key objective of the EdgeX Foundry project is to create a flexible and open Edge IoT platform that can support a range of different vertical use cases across markets as diverse as manufacturing, oil & gas and smart energy. A key vertical market that has emerged where the community and IOTech, in particular, have been involved in multiple projects is Building Automation. Why is Building Automation proving to be such a sweet spot for EdgeX? IOTech's experience is that the requirements of the next generation of Buildings Automation applications align perfectly with the capabilities of EdgeX.  In particular, a modern building is a sophisticated and heterogeneous environment consisting of diverse subsystems including lighting, HVAC and access control. Data can be generated from multiple sources using a range of different device/sensor technologies and protocols (e.g. Modbus, BACnet, DALI, MQTT and others). The sensor data must be normalized by the IoT platform running on an Edge node e.g. an industrial Gateway or on-premise server. The data can then be fed into the building management analytics which can make smart control decisions in "near" real-time on how to automatically optimize the building environment for the benefit of the users and also the building owners.  The openness of EdgeX (can support any "Southbound" OT protocol or "Northbound" Cloud endpoint) and its platform independence (not tied to a specific operating system or hardware/silicon) is key to its suitability for Building Automation use cases.

2017: A Year of Momentum for EdgeX and IOTech

Keith Steele, IOTech CEO, EdgeX Foundry Board member and Technical Steering Committee (TSC) Chair gives his views on why the EdgeX Foundry project has generated so much momentum in just six months after launch, spotlighting also the importance of credible commercialization partners. What is driving this momentum? First and foremost, there's a market need, the industrial internet of Things (IIoT) market is projected to grow to $195B in the next few years (source Markets and Markets), with at least 40% IoT data stored, processed, analyzed at or near the edge (source IDC).   Secondly, there's a technology gap as identified by the IIC's Edge Computing Task Group, the Open Fog consortium and many industry-leading companies. Peter Levine from Andreessen-Horowitz has provocatively suggested that the age of edge compute is taking over the cloud.
