What is BACnet?
- BACnet (Building Automation and Control Network) is an open communications protocol used for standard comms between control systems and devices, particularly in the Building Automation Industry
- BACnet is prevalent in COTS devices relating to heating, ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC), lighting, access control and fire detection systems
- It is a rich protocol that defines specific services and objects used to communicate between the devices. It also defines how data is delivered on the network with standards for:
- BACnet IP - communication over Ethernet
- BACnet MS/TP (Master slave / token passing) via RS485 serial connections
- Compared to proprietary approaches, BACnet controllers and devices from different suppliers and manufacturers are able to communicate with generally little integration effort
IOTech's BACnet device connector supports both BACnet IP and BACnet MS/TP and provides advanced functionality including automatic device discovery and performance optimizations such as reading and writing multiple values in single BACnet commands
