BACnet Device Connector

Easily connect to and control BACnet devices over both IP and serial networks with IOTech’s high performance BACnet device connector

Protocol Description

BACnet (Building Automation and Control Network) is an open communications protocol used for the standard communication between control systems and edge devices in the Building Automation Industry.  It is prevalent in COTS devices relating to lighting, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, access control and fire detection systems.

BACnet defines a set of services and objects used to communicate between the devices and also defines how the data is delivered on the network – including standards for BACnet IP over TCP networks and BACnet MS/TP (Master Slave/Token Passing) which uses RS485 serial connections.

Compared to proprietary approaches, BACnet controllers and edges devices from different suppliers and manufacturers are able to communicate with generally little integration effort.

BACnet Connector Specification

IOTech’s BACnet device connector support both BACnet IP and BACnet MS/TP variants and provides detailed functionality including the performance and scalability benefits associated with the ability to get and set multiple values in a single BACnet commands.

The BACnet device connector implements the following key features:

  • Support for both BACnet IP and BACnet MSTP devices

  • Automatic discovery and onboarding of BACnet devices

  • Reading single BACnet values via the ReadProperty operation

  • Writing single BACnet values via the WriteProperty operation

  • Reading multiple BACnet values via the ReadMultipleProperty operation

  • Writing multiple BACnet values via the WriteMultipleProperty operation

  • Support for Boolean, Unsigned Int, Signed Int, Real, Double, Character String, Octet String, Bit String, Enumerated, Data and Time data types

  • Support for BACnet/IP Broadcast Management Device (BBMD) communication between IP subnets
