IoT Connectivity

IoT Connectivity

The Internet of Things (IoT) has produced a huge surge in the number of devices that need to communicate with both edge and cloud systems. One of the key challenges of the IoT, therefore, is to provide seamless support for device connectivity and data flow. Edge computing plays a crucial role here. It helps create the abstraction and bridging point between the OT edge environments where the data is being produced and locally processed, to the IT and cloud environments where the data can be further harnessed and integrated to back-end systems.

Smart Energy

Smart Energy

Edge computing solutions offer a place for collecting, computing and storing smart meter data before transmitting it to the cloud. This environment acts as a bridge in the middle of the smart grid and the cloud. It is geographically distributed and overhauls cloud computing via additional capabilities including reduced latency for more responsive grid control, increased privacy and locality for smart grids.

Zigbee Device Connector

Zigbee Device Connector

Connect to a Zigbee network and easily read and write data to devices with IOTech's high performance Zigbee device connector. Zigbee is an open wireless mesh network protocol managed by the Zigbee Alliance group. It is designed to transmit small amounts of data between low-power devices on the network. Zigbee is used in residential and commercial building automation environments, industrial heating and cooling systems, and in the medical device sector. Zigbee is a local area network (LAN) protocol, whereas Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is more focused around connectivity of mobile devices in close proximity to a central host device. The Zigbee Cluster Library (ZCL) defines a set of functions and profiles that allow device manufacturers to meaningfully communicate with each other via the protocol. For example, there are Zigbee clusters that define standardized instructions for sensing, lighting and HVAC devices. Zigbee supports both star, tree and mesh network structures and requires a coordinator device to manage the connectivity.

Watch IOTech's latest Edge Xpert Demo using EtherCAT Device Services - the Edge Xpert Device Service allows data from different OT protocols to be ingested from the platform where it can be aggregated, analyzed and shared to other Edge and Cloud systems for further use and storage. EtherCAT stands for Ethernet for Control Automation Technology. It is a fieldbus protocol implementing a master/slave architecture over Ethernet where a packet is transmitted by the master at a user-configurable cycle time. It adopts a unique approach where the packet is not fully processed by each slave individually, but rather as the packet travels through each slave, only data meant for that individual slave is taken, and output data from the slave is written to the packet. This on-the-fly processing and its distributed clock mechanism allow EtherCAT to achieve high data rates, low latency and synchronised output actions.

Join James Butcher, IOTech Product Manager and recognized industry expert for the latest instalment in IOTech's Webcast Series as he discusses the need for interoperability between Edge and Cloud architectures and why a Hybrid model is the way forward. There is currently an acceleration from fully centralized cloud-based systems to distributed architectures driven by edge computing. Cloud computing alone is unable to handle the vast amounts of data that will be created by the billions of connected devices that are predicted, or the need for local insights from the latency-sensitive applications on which they depend. However, most systems will not solely rely on edge computing solutions either. In fact, fully autonomous edge applications are quite rare.

2017: A Year of Momentum for EdgeX and IOTech

2017: A Year of Momentum for EdgeX and IOTech

Keith Steele, IOTech CEO, EdgeX Foundry Board member and Technical Steering Committee (TSC) Chair gives his views on why the EdgeX Foundry project has generated so much momentum in just six months after launch, spotlighting also the importance of credible commercialization partners. What is driving this momentum? First and foremost, there's a market need, the industrial internet of Things (IIoT) market is projected to grow to $195B in the next few years (source Markets and Markets), with at least 40% IoT data stored, processed, analyzed at or near the edge (source IDC).   Secondly, there's a technology gap as identified by the IIC's Edge Computing Task Group, the Open Fog consortium and many industry-leading companies. Peter Levine from Andreessen-Horowitz has provocatively suggested that the age of edge compute is taking over the cloud.

Hitting Performance Targets at the IoT Edge

Hitting Performance Targets at the IoT Edge

Edge computing is all about the premise of an organization processing its operational data at the edge of the network. That means performing data collection functions and running decision making and control algorithms as close to the edge sensors and OT devices as possible. The EdgeX Foundry framework helps makes that premise a reality and provides an open, vendor-neutral approach for doing so. However, we must never lose sight of the fact that businesses will want to understand the full implications, including the fully loaded cost, of rolling out an edge system. EdgeX is a fantastic project for helping to simplify the challenges of edge computing. The open-source and collaborative nature of the project brings together ideas from edge experts around the world. However, to pick up the point about businesses needing to understand the full implications of selecting an edge solution, companies are usually reluctant to deploy open-source code without having guaranteed help at hand and support contracts in place.

Building Automation: A Sweet Spot for EdgeX

Building Automation: A Sweet Spot for EdgeX

The key objective of the EdgeX Foundry project is to create a flexible and open Edge IoT platform that can support a range of different vertical use cases across markets as diverse as manufacturing, oil & gas and smart energy. A key vertical market that has emerged where the community and IOTech, in particular, have been involved in multiple projects is Building Automation. Why is Building Automation proving to be such a sweet spot for EdgeX? IOTech's experience is that the requirements of the next generation of Buildings Automation applications align perfectly with the capabilities of EdgeX.  In particular, a modern building is a sophisticated and heterogeneous environment consisting of diverse subsystems including lighting, HVAC and access control. Data can be generated from multiple sources using a range of different device/sensor technologies and protocols (e.g. Modbus, BACnet, DALI, MQTT and others). The sensor data must be normalized by the IoT platform running on an Edge node e.g. an industrial Gateway or on-premise server. The data can then be fed into the building management analytics which can make smart control decisions in "near" real-time on how to automatically optimize the building environment for the benefit of the users and also the building owners.  The openness of EdgeX (can support any "Southbound" OT protocol or "Northbound" Cloud endpoint) and its platform independence (not tied to a specific operating system or hardware/silicon) is key to its suitability for Building Automation use cases.

Edge Management: The Next Big IoT Challenge

Edge Management: The Next Big IoT Challenge

You now have an application to handle edge/IoT sensor data, make decisions locally, and actuate at the edge. You can even get the data back to your enterprise or cloud safely and affordably with that edge application.

Edge XRT: A Big Hit with Industrial Users

Edge XRT: A Big Hit with Industrial Users

Edge XRT is adding a lot of value and provides clear differentiation over alternative approaches. The first is to provide a flexible IoT framework for microcontroller and microcomputer class devices, these are environments with memory constraints less than 1GB and as low as 256KBs, typically running a low powered ARM processor. Creating IoT applications for these types of device is normally the realm of custom/bespoke application code created by highly experienced embedded developers. What our users like about Edge XRT is that in many cases they can create connected edge applications simply by configuring Edge XRT's standard components without the need for complicated programming, although they can of course create components of any complexity if needed.  This capability was highlighted in our recent webcast "Accelerating Time to Value for IoT Applications at the Far Edge" where we discussed our partnership with Microsoft.  Over the last six months we have been working with the Microsoft Azure Sphere team who have in turn been partnering with a number major hardware vendors to create a new generation of secure, certified chips and MCUs based Azure Sphere IoT technologies. In this case, Edge XRT provides a standard configurable IoT application layer for Azure Sphere devices that can reduce time-to-market for new edge applications deployed within the Azure ecosystem from weeks to days.

IOTech Webcast Series : Edge Management at Scale - Solving the Big Problem in the IoT Room

IOTech Webcast Series : Edge Management at Scale - Solving the Big Problem in the IoT Room

As IoT adoption gathers speed an increasing number of projects are moving from small scale pilots to large scale rollout. At the edge users face a unique set of management challenges when deploying systems consisting of 100s or possibly 1000s of edge nodes. During the presentation, Jim tackles key edge management issues by focusing on approaches to managing both the nodes and their connected devices/sensors, as well as the applications that will be deployed on these nodes. The Session Cover: How is edge management different from cloud / enterprise management? Current edge management approaches, their strengths as well as their limitations. What are the differences between Node management, Application management and Device management? The need for open architecture edge management solutions

From Centralized to Hybrid Edge-Cloud Architectures

From Centralized to Hybrid Edge-Cloud Architectures

Edge computing provides a decentralized approach for device connectivity, data collection and intelligence that allows for real scalability. Edge computing focuses on processing data where it is produced, local to the devices at the edge of the network. As an example, consider the utilities industry and the large-scale monitoring of an electricity power grid. Modern companies are deploying telemetry systems where local substations can collect data from sensors and devices positioned along the network. It is far more efficient to route the sensor data to the substations than to a centralized cloud. The substations, which are often equipped with powerful computing facilities, can make sense of that local data and apply edge intelligence. That intelligence might be to automatically throttle the network to avoid a dangerous power surge or suggest that an engineer inspect a section of the network where readings are abnormal. In addition, many other sectors use edge computing, including manufacturing, retail, building automation, oil and gas, process control and fleet management.

Another Great F2F TSC Meeting

Another Great F2F TSC Meeting

Last week, we held a Face-to-Face Technical Steering Committee meeting in Palo Alto. It was another successful one and, after each meeting, my confidence grows that the EdgeX Foundry project will achieve great things. Before reflecting on the week, I'd like to pass on my thanks on behalf of the community to VMware who hosted the event at their wonderful Palo Alto facility. California Burritos from their cool on-site restaurant was a culinary discovery for me!
