Data Ingestion & Storage
Edge Historian is based on the Core Data Service provided by the open-source EdgeX Foundry but is optimized by IOTech for persistent and high-throughput time-series storage. It captures and stores large volumes of device telemetry data using TimescaleDB, ensuring high-speed reads and writes, compression, and retention tuning at scale.
The Edge Historian Service supports seamless ingestion and storage from a range of Edge Central and EdgeX Foundry sources:
- Telemetry Data – Time-stamped sensor readings from connected edge devices
- Command Data – Records of device commands and control actions
- MQTT Message Bus – Real-time data published over the platform’s internal MQTT bus
- Edge Services via API – Data from applications using the provided REST APIs
