I am delighted to announce that the latest version of IOTech's Edge Xpert open edge computing platform is now released and available to download and deploy. Edge Xpert 1.7 is another leap forward in both the usability of the product and further expansion of the edge connectivity options provided out-of-the-box. Easier to Use and New Tooling, Device Connectivity, cameras and videos, cloud connectivity are enhanced features added to this update. The release is based on EdgeX Foundry's Geneva release
With the help of Basking Automation - our building automation partner, we designed the demonstrator so that the lighting and air conditioning of three distinct zones in a smart building could be automatically controlled based on the ambient conditions and the number of occupants in each zone. The role of EdgeX is to collect data from industrial-grade light and temperature sensors, then to efficiently manage the office environment by intelligently delivering the desired actuation values to the lighting and air conditioning units. The objective of the demonstration was to give an opportunity for visitors to the stand to affect the behaviour themselves by swiping users into zones, interacting with the sensors and observing the resulting changes to the lights and air conditioning units. The demonstration also included a power meter so that the efficiency gains from the automation can be easily observed. All this functionality was running at the Edge but we also demonstrated Cloud system integration by delivering data to the Basking platform which provides further detailed control and analysis for the building automation domain.
Keith Steele, IOTech CEO, EdgeX Foundry Board member and Technical Steering Committee (TSC) Chair gives his views on why the EdgeX Foundry project has generated so much momentum in just six months after launch, spotlighting also the importance of credible commercialization partners. What is driving this momentum? First and foremost, there's a market need, the industrial internet of Things (IIoT) market is projected to grow to $195B in the next few years (source Markets and Markets), with at least 40% IoT data stored, processed, analyzed at or near the edge (source IDC). Secondly, there's a technology gap as identified by the IIC's Edge Computing Task Group, the Open Fog consortium and many industry-leading companies. Peter Levine from Andreessen-Horowitz has provocatively suggested that the age of edge compute is taking over the cloud.

There is currently an acceleration from fully centralized cloud-based systems to distributed architectures driven by edge computing. Cloud computing alone is unable to handle the vast amounts of data that will be created by the billions of connected devices that are predicted, or the need for local insights from the latency-sensitive applications on which they depend. However, most systems will not solely rely on edge computing solutions either. In fact, fully autonomous edge applications are quite rare.
IOTech, the IoT Edge Platform company, announced today it is in the process of developing an EdgeX Foundry™ community demonstrator. EdgeX Foundry supports a common IoT edge framework enabling an ecosystem of plug-and-play components that unifies the marketplace and makes it easier for developers to build, deploy, run and scale IoT solutions for industrial, enterprise and consumer applications. This project is the first of several community demonstrators, which will be used to showcase the full capabilities of the EdgeX IoT Edge Platform across several use cases, and vertical markets. IOTech are excited to announce the release of Edge Xpert 1.6. This is a significant new product release for a number of reasons but I wanted to highlight in this blog about how version 1.6 includes the initial availability of Edge XRT. Edge XRT is a new IOTech product we are launching and is the first real-time edge computing platform for the Industrial IoT. Aimed at real-time industrial process automation and embedded microcontroller applications, XRT enables ultra-low latency, high frequency data processing in a powerful edge computing platform. Edge XRT is adding a lot of value and provides clear differentiation over alternative approaches. The first is to provide a flexible IoT framework for microcontroller and microcomputer class devices, these are environments with memory constraints less than 1GB and as low as 256KBs, typically running a low powered ARM processor. Creating IoT applications for these types of device is normally the realm of custom/bespoke application code created by highly experienced embedded developers. What our users like about Edge XRT is that in many cases they can create connected edge applications simply by configuring Edge XRT's standard components without the need for complicated programming, although they can of course create components of any complexity if needed. This capability was highlighted in our recent webcast "Accelerating Time to Value for IoT Applications at the Far Edge" where we discussed our partnership with Microsoft. Over the last six months we have been working with the Microsoft Azure Sphere team who have in turn been partnering with a number major hardware vendors to create a new generation of secure, certified chips and MCUs based Azure Sphere IoT technologies. In this case, Edge XRT provides a standard configurable IoT application layer for Azure Sphere devices that can reduce time-to-market for new edge applications deployed within the Azure ecosystem from weeks to days.

Watch IOTech's latest Edge Xpert Demo using EtherCAT Device Services - the Edge Xpert Device Service allows data from different OT protocols to be ingested from the platform where it can be aggregated, analyzed and shared to other Edge and Cloud systems for further use and storage. EtherCAT stands for Ethernet for Control Automation Technology. It is a fieldbus protocol implementing a master/slave architecture over Ethernet where a packet is transmitted by the master at a user-configurable cycle time. It adopts a unique approach where the packet is not fully processed by each slave individually, but rather as the packet travels through each slave, only data meant for that individual slave is taken, and output data from the slave is written to the packet. This on-the-fly processing and its distributed clock mechanism allow EtherCAT to achieve high data rates, low latency and synchronised output actions.

The key objective of the EdgeX Foundry project is to create a flexible and open Edge IoT platform that can support a range of different vertical use cases across markets as diverse as manufacturing, oil & gas and smart energy. A key vertical market that has emerged where the community and IOTech, in particular, have been involved in multiple projects is Building Automation. Why is Building Automation proving to be such a sweet spot for EdgeX? IOTech's experience is that the requirements of the next generation of Buildings Automation applications align perfectly with the capabilities of EdgeX. In particular, a modern building is a sophisticated and heterogeneous environment consisting of diverse subsystems including lighting, HVAC and access control. Data can be generated from multiple sources using a range of different device/sensor technologies and protocols (e.g. Modbus, BACnet, DALI, MQTT and others). The sensor data must be normalized by the IoT platform running on an Edge node e.g. an industrial Gateway or on-premise server. The data can then be fed into the building management analytics which can make smart control decisions in "near" real-time on how to automatically optimize the building environment for the benefit of the users and also the building owners. The openness of EdgeX (can support any "Southbound" OT protocol or "Northbound" Cloud endpoint) and its platform independence (not tied to a specific operating system or hardware/silicon) is key to its suitability for Building Automation use cases.

Since we launched Edge XRT over a year ago the technology is proving to be a big success with our customers. IOTech made its first-ever appearance at the National Retail Federation show this year (NRF2020 in New York City, Jan 11-14) and did so in style. IOTech's Edge Xpert platform was selected by two retail heavy-hitters, Intel Corporation and HP Inc. to power their demos of edge computing for retail use cases. The primary use case on show was Intelligent Loss Prevention - that is, how to maximize the customer convenience of self-service checkouts, while minimizing the potential losses suffered by the retailer. Self-service checkouts are now commonplace in supermarkets and growing fast in other stores, but the limited integration of data from the discreet devices and applications involved (e.g. bar code scanners, connected weighing scales, POS systems and video cameras) means they are prone to misuse and fraud (examples of that are the subject of a totally different type of blog). However, through innovations at the edge, live integration of this data and the addition of integrated user interfaces allows for misuse to be identified in real-time and store staff immediately alerted to 'help' the customer and investigate.

The event will focus on the retail market and work stemmed from the Commerce (e.g. Retail) Working Group within the EdgeX Foundry project and the related Open Retail Initiative (ORI). Zigbee is an open wireless mesh network protocol managed by the Zigbee Alliance group. It is designed to transmit small amounts of data between low-power devices on the network. Zigbee is used in residential and commercial building automation environments, industrial heating and cooling systems, and in the medical device sector. Zigbee is a local area network (LAN) protocol, whereas Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is more focused around connectivity of mobile devices in close proximity to a central host device. The Zigbee Cluster Library (ZCL) defines a set of functions and profiles that allow device manufacturers to meaningfully communicate with each other via the protocol. For example, there are Zigbee clusters that define standardized instructions for sensing, lighting and HVAC devices. Zigbee supports both star, tree and mesh network structures and requires a coordinator device to manage the connectivity.
