Managing Devices

The Devices pane displays when Edge Xpert Manager opens. To display the Devices pane at any other time, select DEVICES from the main menu.

Use the Devices pane to do the following:

Viewing Current Devices

The Devices pane displays all devices that are currently configured and running in Edge Xpert. When the Virtual Device Service is running (as described in Edge Xpert Manager), the display of the simulated devices is similar to the following:

You can search for particular devices and view the device properties from the Devices pane. The device properties include the following information:

  • Operating State
  • Admin State (locked/unlocked)
  • Last time the device was connected

Viewing Device Metadata

You can view detailed metadata for a device, such as the following:

  • Name
  • Description
  • Device ID
  • Manufacturer
  • Model
  • Labels
  • Address
  • Status
  • Details of the associated device service
  • Defined AutoEvents for data collection

Note

The available metadata is defined by the device.

To view detailed metadata for the device, select the View Device (i) icon from the Action column for the device.

You can move up and down the available data using the scroll bar. The display of the device information is similar to the following:

Locking or Unlocking a Device

You can lock a device to prevent changes. If changes are required and the device is locked, the device must be unlocked.

To lock or unlock a specific device, complete the following steps:

  1. Select the Lock Device (padlock) icon from the Action column for the device

    The Change Admin Status dialog box displays

  2. Select the OK button. Selecting the Cancel button closes the dialog box without locking or unlocking the device

Reading and Writing Device Data

To read and write a device’s current data values, select the Control Device (speedometer) icon from the Action column for the device. For example, the following details are displayed for the Random-Integer-Generator01 Random Integer device:

Writable values are defined in the device profile and can be set by the user. To set the writable values, select the Set Value (edit) icon. The configurable values display for update as required.

For example, to change the maximum generated integer for the GenerateRandomValue_Int16 of the Random-Integer-Generator01 device, complete the following steps:

  1. From the Devices pane, select the Control Device (speedometer) from the Action column of the Random-Integer-Generator01 device

  2. Select the the Set Value (edit) icon from the Action column of the GenerateRandomValue_Int16 value

  3. Update the MAX_INT8 text box from 127 to 105

  1. Select the OK button. Selecting the Cancel button closes the dialog box without changing the data for the value

Adding a Device

To add a device to EdgeXpert Manager, complete the following steps:

  1. Select the Add (+) icon, as illustrated below:

  1. Ensure that the relevant Device Service is running and select the type of device to add. If the device you require is not listed, select Other. Only fields required for the selected device are displayed. If you selected Other, a generic set of fields are displayed. In the following example, we selected OPC-UA:

  1. Enter all the required information. The examples in the Edge Xpert Device Services topic provide example entries for each Device Service
  2. Select the Add (+) button below the Device Profile selection box, as illustrated below

  1. Navigate to and select the profile you require
  2. Select the Open button
  3. Select the Upload button, as illustrated below:

  1. Select your uploaded profile from the Device Profile drop-down menu, as illustrated below:

  1. Select the appropriate Device Service from the Device Service drop-down menu

  2. Define any Auto Events for collecting data from the devices. To do this, complete the following steps:

    1. Enter the frequency. For example, enter 100ms, 10s, or 5d to collect the data every 100 milliseconds, 10 seconds or 5 days respectively
    2. Enable or disable the ON CHANGE toggle button, as follows:
      • To report changes only in the sensor data, enable the toggle
      • To report all readings, disable the toggle
    3. Enter the resource from which you want to collect the data
    4. Select the Add button

  3. Select the OK button to create the device

Deleting a Device

To delete a device, complete the following steps:

  1. Select the Delete Device (x) icon from the Action column for the device

    The Confirm Delete dialog box displays.

  2. Select the OK button to delete the device. Selecting the Cancel button closes the dialog box without deleting the device
